Such a short amount of space limits character development, which can be an advantage or a disadvantage. With so little space, you have to come up with more creative ways to develop characters, which can make the story better and more interesting.
An advantage of flash fiction is that it is the best way to make a social, political, or emotional critique or observation in a very moving and powerful way, striking the reader instantaneously without need fir superfluous and drawn out descriptions. This will ultimately make the words of the author more memorable. On the contrary, often times the characters remain easily forgotten and often left alone. In longer stories the characters have the ability to leave lasting impression on us, we get to relate to the characters on multiple levels. We all remember characters from great novels, but can we recall a flash fiction character?
An advantage is that the writer does not need to create an in-depth back story. A disadvantage is that descriptions of characters must be concise in order for the reader to have a good "feel" for who the characters are without reading a LOT of description.
Some of the advantages include the ability to jump right into a scene or story without having to write several paragraphs or pages of introductory material, the ability to use metaphors or different story telling formats. By different formats I mean stories like we read for the week titled “mimetic forms” which included a story in the form of a letter and another in the form of an audio tour. The format of flash fiction enables a great deal of creativity. One of the Disadvantages is that due to the shorter length you often times have trouble getting everything into a story that you want. This can be troublesome when trying to develop a character or building a particular emotion in the reader.
Advantages: Focus on essential framework, able to get idea across quick without dwelling on "fill-in" characteristics and details, and ideas that you try to write as something longer doesn't work and an excellent flash fiction piece is born. Disadvantages: Writer needs to craft every word with precision, character development in short length, and abstract views are not welcomed - need to be very specific.
Advantages – it’s easier to copy or mimic other forms of writing or formats that are not typically seen in fiction. Also, because the pieces are limited in length, a reader is more likely to stay interested/invested in the story.
Disadvantages – because the pieces are short, every word needs to be chosen carefully and there can be no room for clichéd phrases. Also, time for character development is shortened.
An advantage of flash fiction would be that you get to the essential part of the fiction, a disadvantage would be that you have to squeeze ideas and meticulously craft your word choice.
A writer who prefers longer form can use flash fiction as too both for controlling the amount of detail they wish to use in their work and as an exercise in less mundane language. Creating sympathetic characters in flash fiction is dubious to say the least. Characters in flash fiction tend to be more of an anecdote or an allegory. use of certain literary techniques that are useful in flash fiction do not translate well into longer works.
The advantages are that you don't have to give a lot of background. You can just focus on essential details. The disadvantage is that you have to craft every word because you don't have extensive character development, plot or setting. It is tighter editing and crafting.
The advantages of Flash Fiction is the writer has the ability to write a deep and thought provoking story. The disadvantages of writing flash fiction is that the writer must often omit key plot points that he or she feels compelled to write.
